Literacy

Language and Literacy is one of the core Areas of Learning in the curriculum. It focuses on developing children’s language and literacy skills. These enable children to interact effectively in the world around them, express themselves creatively and communicate confidently.

Children will develop the knowledge, understanding and skills in:

  • Talking and Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing.

These modes of communication extend across all Areas of Learning. Children will have opportunities to develop their language and literacy skills through all learning experiences. These skills are essential for thinking, learning and interacting in personal, social and work contexts throughout life. Literacy is key to learning and also to enjoyment and personal growth.

At St. Michael's we have  had a very busy calendar of Literacy events throughout Term 1 and 2. In Term 1 children celebrated Roald Dahl Day, National Poetry Day and we had our Foundation Stage parents in for our annual Phonics and Reading workshop. In Term 2 we celebrated World Book day in style launching our first ever Book Fair in St. Michael's. This has enabled us to purchase new accelerated reading titles as selected by the children, we look forward to witnessing a renewed enthusiasm for reading in Term 3 . This Term children across the key stages will be focusing on the genre of Persuasive Writing and they will be developing the comprehension skills of summarising, cause and effect and fact and Opinion.

At St. Michael's we are always here to provide Literacy information and support and we are very grateful towards our supportive parents who work hand in hand with our teachers. The EA Literacy Service have also provided a range of resources to include information leaflets, suggested activities/resources and training videos to help parents to support literacy development at home. These resources you will find attached below.
