Mathematics and Numeracy
We at St Michael’s Primary School provide warm, welcoming, and inclusive classrooms where each child is encouraged to explore mathematical ideas with confidence and curiosity. We celebrate different ways of thinking, supporting one another, and creating an environment where every pupil feels inspired to succeed in maths.
We set high expectations, provide engaging and challenging learning opportunities, and support every learner to reach their full potential. Through numeracy, we promote different methods of learning including the use of online maths platforms such as IZAK9, different learning schemes and outdoor learning opportunities.
Numeracy provides an opportunity to develop resilience and self-confidence in our learners. Through problem-solving, reasoning, and learning from mistakes, pupils are able to build perseverance and see challenges as opportunities for growth. We create a supportive environment where children are encouraged to try, reflect, and improve. In each class, we encourage the use of 2 stars and a wish as well as peer and self-assessment. This helps them develop their mathematical skills and have a greater belief in themselves.
Maths is a skill that connects us with the world around us, including our local community. Through real-life experiences, our pupils are able to see how maths is used every day by the people and places around them. From creating our own businesses and services through young enterprise, we are able to use maths to promote teamwork and strengthen connections within our wider community.
