Investigating Respiration in P3/P4
As part of their World Around Us topic, “Under the Sea,” pupils have been carrying out in-depth investigations into the seven life processes, with a particular focus on respiration, exploring and comparing how both humans and fish breathe as well as analysing how lungs and gills function. Pupils are now able to identify and explain how gills absorb oxygen contained in the water and release carbon dioxide and excess water back into the sea. The children created their own “gills,” whereby, they used coffee grounds to represent oxygen and a paper towel to act as gills, which resulted in the pupils being able to visualise how gills separate/absorb the oxygen from the water. Excellent investigating, P3/P4!
